When you are asked the question, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" in an interview, you are supposed to make up some company-worshipping jargon about how you plan on staying there for the rest of your life. The truth is, I have no idea where I will be, career-wise, in the next five years. I could be an adjunct professor. Or a librarian. Or an instructional designer. Or a writer. What? I didn't say that.
While I may not have my career path cemented, by God do I have my personal life in order. This past weekend I thought a lot about when Nathan and I will graduate and what our life will look like based on those dates. Insert a few life dreams, maybe a kid, and voila. My Five Year Plan. And since life always happens the way you expect it to, the following can be taken as an exact portrait of what my life will look like for the next five years.
What did I learn from this experiment?
1. My brain still divides years based on the academic calendar.
2. There is a lot of "grad school and marriage" for the next couple years, but I think that's a good thing. Room for crazy parties and marriage and fights and late nights throwing anthologies against the walls, and then paying the landlord for the walls.
3. Nathan can accomplish Ph.D-ness in the time it takes me to get a Master's degree.
4. Europe seems far away, but not that far away.
5. I really don't want a boy-child.

ReplyDeleteI love your snark. Or whatever one would call that.
Are you going to be the opposite of most cultures and just keep having babies until you have a girl? And then leave all of your inheritance to her?
I'm still so glad that you're waiting till 2018 to have babies. I don't think my heart could take it otherwise. Side note: the only reason why I someday want a boy-child is so that he can take care of his [hopefully] younger sister.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Carrie's comment just made me imagine what the plot of Downton Abbey would look like if everything was reversed. o_O
