[[I am SO busy, have NO time for anything, but these are the thoughts that have been floating around in my mind for the past two months]]
What do you do when the NFL has lax laws, overpays their overglorified heroes, teams are worshiped as idols and players as gods that beat women and children while the world looks forward to a good game?
What do you do when Little House on the Prairie tells you that the only good Indian is a dead Indian? That they smell bad, steal, and a justification for Ma's racism is that she "just doesn't like them" now stop asking questions?
When Raggedy Ann is just adorable blackface?
And don't get me started on Disney.
When do we set aside nostalgia and take a stand, and when are we overreacting?
Do we dress our daughters in a cheerleading uniform displaying a team name that does everything but respect their personhood, hand her a red-haired rag doll, and, at the end of the day, turn on Peter Pan? Why does it really matter, anyway, they're just a child and they don't understand but you do, and you see them watching them sing why is the red man red? and maybe this is a moment that they'll never remember and they'll grow up to be perfectly non-racist people. It's just a movie.
But is a hot dog just a hot dog? You're vegetarian and the hot dog is so much more than the only thing served at the barbecue so you take two ears of corn and extra potato chips and try to hide your plate so the host doesn't feel guilty but in all honesty at this point in your life a hot dog would make you sick for a couple hours so is it all worth it? You don't support an industry that preys on the week, the beings of God's creation manipulated and manufactured for the idols of convenience and appetite because gluttony is only seen as overeating and not eating what one shouldn't. Can you eat the hot dog when in it you see pigs chewing on their stall bars and not being able to turn around, cows hanging by their ankle, not to mention the underpaid immigrant workers, the pollution, the mutated chickens. A hot dog is not a hot dog and even though it makes the host uncomfortable and you uncomfortable you can't in good conscience eat that damn hot dog.
So is a football game just a football game?
Is a children's book just a book?
Where does it end.
I am so tired.
But I know these things.
And I can't unknow them.
This is really good, April.
